CHANDIGARH: In a bid to control the increasing number of vehicles on the campus and to deal with traffic congestion, Panjab University authorities are now planning to have another entry gate. Students would be issued stickers of specific colours for their vehicles to enter from a particular gate. The committee formed to deal with traffic congestion has suggested connecting of the road from Student Centre to the road leading to pharmacy department to remove a diversion and make traffic on the route one-way.
In a meeting held on Wednesday, the committee proposed various ways to deal with the increasing traffic, which include a new entry gate. According to sources, the committee members have proposed that a gate should come up near law department. It should cater to departments including law, University institute of legal studies, pharmacy, school of communication studies and other hostels and departments near them. The objective behind having another gate would be to restrict movement of vehicles coming to all these departments across the campus, a committee member said.
The committee has suggested having stickers of four different colours for the vehicles as passes, which would make for permission to enter through specific gates for them to head directly towards a department.
The committee members are also of the view that the road opposite PU boys hostel number 1 leading to Student Centre could connect straight to the road heading to pharmacy department. Turning right towards Gandhi Bhawan from the library roundabout could thus have an alternative. Students could be driving straight to the area flanking Student Centre on to University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) and pharmacy department. The university plans to make another stretch, from the library roundabout to law department, a one-way traffic zone.
PU had earlier decided to take an undertaking from new students seeking admission in hostels that they won't keep a four-wheeler in hostels throughout the course. Meanwhile, PU has allocated a sum of Rs 30 crore in 2011-12 budget for a multi-level parking on the campus.
